Genesis Energy sells its soda ash operations to a third party for $1.43 billion

Genesis Energy announced on Monday that it has sold its soda-ash manufacturing and related activities to an indirect unit within WE Soda, for $1.43 Billion. This will allow the pipeline operator the opportunity to concentrate on the midstream sector.

Genesis shares were trading at $13.00, up 1.3% in premarket trade after the company announced that $1.01 billion would be used for debt reduction and to buy back shares.

Grant Sims, CEO of Genesis, said in a press release that the transaction gave Genesis financial flexibility to simplify our capital structure faster.

Alkali operations or soda ash make products such as sodium bicarbonate, and other specialty chemicals that are used in industries like glass manufacture, detergents, and batteries.

The company, which is located near Green River in Wyoming, produces 4.3 million tons of steel annually.

Genesis acquired Tronox's alkali business in 2017 for approximately $1.33 billion to expand its chemicals division. Reporting by Tanay in Bengaluru, Editing by Maju.
