PetroChina announces record net profit for 2024 on the back of higher production

PetroChina, Asia's biggest oil and gas producer announced on Sunday that its annual net profit had risen 2%, to a new record, due to moderately increased production, which helped offset lower oil price.

PetroChina reported in a filing with the Shanghai Stock Exchange that its net profit in 2024 was 164.7 billion Yuan ($22.68billion), compared to 161.1 billion Yuan in 2023. Revenues also decreased 2.5%, to 2,938.0 Billion Yuan.

CNOOC Ltd, a domestic peer company, reported an 11.4% increase in net profits to 137.9 bn yuan on Thursday. However earnings at the refining giant Sinopec dropped 16.8% to 50.3 bn yuan.

PetroChina, a state-controlled company, produced 941.8 millions barrels of crude last year or 2,57 million barrels a day, an increase of 0.5% compared to 2023.

The natural gas production increased by 4.1% to 5,133.8 billion cubic foot (bcf).

The average realized price of crude oil is 3.8% less than 2023 levels.

The refinery's output dropped by 1.5%, to 1,38 billion barrels or 3.77 millions barrels per day. This is a sharp decline from the 15.3% increase in growth that was recorded last year, as a result of sluggish economic growth, and rapid electrification.

PetroChina will permanently close half of its largest refinery subsidiary in northeast China in 2023, in line with Beijing's policy that limits the country's total oil processing capacity in order to control industry overcapacity.

Gasoline sales fell 4.5% for the company, diesel sales dropped 6.9% and jet kerosene rose 9% due to an extended air travel recovery.

The production of chemical products has increased by 49.3% in the last year.

In 2024 "natural gas prices on the international market will fall further." PetroChina Chairman Dai Houliang stated in a filing that the competition in the domestic refined petroleum market has intensified and the consumption of natural gases has continued to grow rapidly.

He said that the demand for natural gas will continue to grow rapidly, but competition on the domestic refined-oil market will intensify.

PetroChina projects crude oil production at 936.2 millions barrels by 2025, and natural gas output at 5,341 BCF.

The refinery's output is also expected to reach 1.3 billion barrels this year, or 3.65 millions barrels per day.

The capital expenditures for this year are 262.2 billion yuan, while the 275.8 spent in 2024.

According to a separate filing, the company has also proposed a dividend of 0.25 Yuan per share. Reporting by Ethan Wang and Chen Aizhu from Beijing and Singapore. Editing by Jane Merriman
