Ukraine Railways says cyberattack on Sunday affected its online freight service

Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukraine's state railways), the largest cargo carrier in the country, announced on Tuesday that its online freight service had been hit by a massive cyber attack.

The first outage reported was on Sunday, when the rail company informed passengers of a problem with its IT system. They were told to purchase tickets at the station or on the train.

Later, the company said that its online systems were subjected a targeted large-scale cyber attack.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, trains have become the primary mode of transport for both domestic and international travelers. They are also a major route for delivering weapons, fuel, and equipment.

The company posted on Facebook that "in addition to passenger service, our IT experts and partners are working to reestablish freight services."

We informed our customers that we had temporarily switched from electronic document management to paper-based documentation management immediately after the cyberattack. "All railway employees have received instructions."

Both a Ukrainian official of security and a senior source in the government, who spoke on condition that they remain anonymous, stated this week that it appeared as if Russia was responsible for the attack.

Ukrzaliznytsia gives detailed instructions to commercial companies about how to order wagons according to the new conditions, and how to dispatch them in the direction to export ports and to the western border. Bill Berkrot edited the report by Pavel Polityuk.
