First round of SA Open weather-affected by a trio

After bad lighting cut short Thursday's opening day of the DP World Tour South African Open, Fredrik From, Sam Bairstow, and Darren Fichardt shared the lead with seven under par. Fichardt had yet to complete his round.

The course was covered in huge puddles on Wednesday, and the start of first round was three hours delayed. This left a number of golfers with a lot of time to finish their rounds.

From had two eagles on his 65. Both were par fives. Bairstow, on the other hand, managed eight birdies. His round was only marred by a missed shot on his par four seventh.

Fichardt, who is seven under par with four more holes to go, is a shot behind the leaders. Five other golfers are also a shot behind.

"I putted very nicely. I hit some wedges and then holed several putts. Bairstow described the day as "just a good one".

"I thought yesterday that there was no way to play on Thursday, but I'm grateful for the work done by the green staff in making it playable."

On Friday, approximately half of the field of 156 players must complete their first rounds.

The South African Open was first played in 1903. It is one of the oldest golf national championships.
