FT reports that India's Adani Group has revived US investment plans

The Financial Times reported that India's Adani Group had revived plans to invest in major infrastructure projects in the U.S. where its founder was charged with bribery.

The report cited four people who were close to Gautam Adani, founder and chairman, to say that since the election of Donald Trump the conglomerate had reactivated plans to fund projects such as nuclear energy and utilities as well as a port on the East Coast.

In November, federal prosecutors in New York unveiled an indictment accusing Gautam Adani bribing Indian government officials to convince them to purchase electricity produced by Adani Green Energy.

The FT reported a close Adani associate as saying, "We know what to do but we'll wait until the case is resolved."

Adani Group said that the allegations were "baseless", and it would pursue "all legal remedies possible." The company did not respond immediately to a comment request on the FT article.

The newspaper reported that the group had been in discussions with U.S. firms about potential partnerships, and had also looked into petrochemical investment in Texas.

Gautam Adani, after Trump's election victory in November, said that the group would invest $10 billion into U.S. infrastructure and energy projects. This could create 15,000 new jobs.

Trump has promised to make it easier to drill and build pipelines on federal lands.

The FT reported that "Once Trump was elected, we reactivated certain plans", citing a source they did not identify.

Last month, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission requested help from Indian authorities in its investigation into Gautam Adani and Sagar Adani regarding allegations of securities fraud and $265 million bribery scheme.

Hindenburg Research (a short seller based in the United States that disbanded this year) accused the conglomerate of stock manipulation and improper use of offshore tax hashes, which led to a $150 billion drop in the shares of group companies. Adani has denied these allegations. (Reporting and editing by William Mallard in Bengaluru, Mrinmay Dey)
