The Finnish and Estonian grid operators will not enforce the seizure of tankers after a power cable rupture

Fingrid, the Finnish operator of the power grid system, said that it had reached an agreement with its Estonian partner Elering to waive the right for the two companies to seize the Eagle S oil-tanker. Finland claims the tanker broke a Baltic Sea cable in December.

The Cook Islands Eagle S, registered in Finland, was boarded on December 26 by the Finnish coast guard. It still sits at a Finnish port while investigators investigate the case of the breakage of Estlink 2's power cable and the four fibre-optic Internet lines.

Fingrid stated in a Sunday statement that the cost to take over and maintain the Eagle S vessel would be more than its value. The system operators will seek compensation in court by suing for damages.

The company stated that "at this stage, Fingrid and Elering are willing to pay for the repair costs in order to have the (Estlink 2 interconnector) available as soon as possible."

After a series of power outages, telecom links and gas pipelines since Russia invaded Ukraine 2022, the Baltic Sea region has been on high alert. The NATO military alliance increased its presence by adding aircraft, frigates and naval drones. (Reporting and editing by Hugh Lawson, Elaine Hardcastle, and Terje Solsvik)
