Alpine skiing-Vonn to return to World Cup racing

Lindsey Vonn will make her return to the World Cup circuit for the first time in almost 6 years in two very Gs in St. Moritz, Switzerland on Dec. 2122, the Olympic gold medallist said on Friday.

The 40-year-old speed professional retired in February 2019 mentioning the physical toll the sport had actually taken on her body but, following partial knee replacement surgical treatment in April, she announced she was picking up last month.

Vonn returned to competitors with 4 races in Copper Mountain, Colorado last weekend, which led her to choose to complete at St. Moritz.

What changed was that I was put back together again, Vonn told a press conference.

I had been fighting with injuries since my very first ACL in 2013 and I have actually pretty much been hurt every year after that. The last couple of years of my career were more challenging than I let on, she stated.

But I feel more powerful now than I performed in my late 20s. The enthusiasm for snowboarding has never ever disappeared, I just wasn't physically able to do it any longer.

So now that I have the opportunity to physically do what I enjoy, why would I not attempt? Life is brief. You have actually got to live every day to the optimum which's all I'm doing.

She stated her entire outlook changed after having bone in her knee changed with titanium, which enabled her to straighten her best leg totally for the very first time in years.

It was quite right after surgical treatment and in the rehabilitation process that I was currently doing things that I hadn't performed in years, she stated.

My body was just functioning better. Clearly I am a lot happier since I'm not in discomfort 24 hr a day.

I'm getting more powerful and better and faster than I was for a long, extended period of time.

The four-time total World Cup champion, who has 82 World Cup wins to her name and three Olympic medals consisting of one gold, said she has objectives beyond just participating in races.

While I am extremely excited to be getting involved, I certainly have goals and expectations, she added. I'm trying to be as patient with myself as possible on this journey. Take it step by step, not avoid any steps.

I understand my method back to a competitive level might take a race or more but I certainly intend to get back to where I was in the past.
