Cheniere, a LNG exporter, signs a natural gas agreement with Canadian Natural Resources

U.S. exporter Cheniere Energy announced on Wednesday that its unit had entered into a long term agreement to buy natural gas from Canadian Natural Resources.

Why is it important?

In 2024, the U.S. was the largest exporter in the world of liquefied gas. It shipped 11,9 billion cubic feet of supercooled fuel per day.

After Donald Trump took office, the commercial activity in this sector has increased.

CONTEXT

Cheniere said in February that it would aggressively pursue regulatory permits for expanding capacity now that Trump has taken office.

It had said that the company planned to double its current LNG output to 90 million tonnes per year by building additional export facilities in Texas at Sabine Pass, Corpus Christi and both.

The supply agreement between Cheniere and Canadian Natural is contingent upon Cheniere's final investment decision in the Sabine Pass Liquefaction project (SPL).

By the Numbers

Canadian Natural Resources and Cheniere Marketing have agreed to a 15-year agreement that will see the sale of 140,000 million British Thermal Units per day to Cheniere Marketing. The contract is expected to begin in 2030.

The SPL project will have a total capacity of about 20 MTPA LNG. (Reporting and editing by Shilpa Majumdar in Bengaluru. Katha Kalia is reporting from Bengaluru.
