The worst air crashes of recent years around the world

Authorities said that many people died when an Air India flight bound for London, with 242 passengers on board, crashed just minutes after it took off from Ahmedabad, a western city. This was the worst aviation accident in a decade.

Here are some details about other deadly crashes that have occurred in recent years.

UNITED STATES On January 29, more than 60 people died when an American Airlines regional jet collided into a U.S. Army Black Hawk chopper and crashed in the icy Potomac River, near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

SOUTH KOREA On December 29, 2024, the Jeju Air flight 7C2216 crash-landed at Muan Airport killing all of its 175 passengers as well as four out of six crew members. This was the worst air disaster to ever occur on South Korean soil.

KAZAKHSTAN Azerbaijan Airlines flight J2-8243 crashed in Kazakhstan on December 25, after it was diverted from Russia. The crash killed 38 people. Ilham Aliyev, the president of Azerbaijan, said that the plane was damaged in December by an accidental shooting on the ground. Moscow hasn't confirmed this.

On January 2, a Japan Airlines (JAL), Airbus A350-941 flight, collided with an aircraft of the Coast Guard. The Airbus A350-941 JAL flight was carrying 379 passengers. All of them escaped from the burning plane. Five out of six crew members on the smaller plane were killed.

On March 21, 2022 a China Eastern Airlines Boeing 737-801 crashed into a mountainous area in southwest Guangxi, killing all 132 passengers. This was the deadliest aviation accident in China in 28 years.

IRAN Iran’s Revolutionary Guards destroyed a Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737 800 on Jan. 8, 2019, shortly after the plane took off from Tehran Airport. All 176 passengers and crew were killed. Iran's civil Aviation body blamed an incorrectly aligned radar system and an error made by an air defence operator.

ETHIOPIA On March 19, 2019, minutes after taking off from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 Ethiopian Airlines plane crashed killing all 157 passengers on board.

The Boeing 737 MAX global aircraft fleet was grounded shortly after due to safety concerns.

INDONESIA On October 29, 2018, a Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air aircraft crashed into the Java Sea shortly after it took off from Jakarta, killing all 189 passengers and crew members.

MALAYSIA

Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17, which was bound for Kuala Lumpur from Amsterdam on 17 July 2014, was shot down in eastern Ukraine during a fierce battle between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian forces. All 298 passengers aboard were killed.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared on its journey from Kuala Lumpur towards Beijing on 8 March 2014. No remains of the Boeing 787 or the 239 passengers have been discovered. (Compiled by Joanna Plucinska, edited by Andrew Heavens.
