Lufthansa could face a strike after pilots vote to industrial action

After the pilots' union VC announced on Tuesday that its members voted to walk out in a dispute about pensions, Lufthansa may face a strike.

The union has tried to increase pressure on Lufthansa in order to get a better pilots' deal. This vote comes just a day after Lufthansa held its Capital Markets Day, where it presented its plan to be more efficient.

The airline has threatened to shift more jobs to Discover and City Airlines, its cheaper subsidiary.

VC or Vereinigung Cockpit said in a press release that a large majority of its members voted to strike. However, it did not give a timeline for industrial action.

It is still possible that more disruptive and costly labour actions will be taken against Lufthansa. The airline has already been faced with several labour challenges in recent years, as it strives to reduce costs and pursue growth.

It announced plans on Monday to reduce 4,000 administrative positions by 2030, and set higher profit targets. Reporting by Ilona wissenbach and Ludwig Burger; Writing by Joanna Plucinska; Editing by Friederikeheine, Kirstiknolle, and Louise Heavens
