Singapore's ST Engineering displays cargo drones and marine craft as it expands its reach

ST Engineering will be showcasing two platforms at the Singapore Airshow, which mark an?important expansion into next-generation technologies for the largest provider of airframe maintenance and repair services in the world.

The Singapore-based company announced partnerships at Asia's largest aerospace event for its hovercraft-like AirFish Voyager and launched the DrN600, an all-electric large vertical take-off and landing cargo drone.

In an interview conducted on the sidelines of the show, Jeffrey Lam, Chief Operating Officer of ST Engineering, and President of its commercial aerospace business, said that drones are "a new market".

ST Engineering reports that the DrN-600 drone, which has a range over 70 km (43 miles) and can carry 100 kg (220 pounds), is their highest-capacity drone. It's aimed at medium-lift operations and certification should be expected by 2028.

ST Engineering, along with many other industry players, is navigating global supply chains, and seeking growth opportunities in emerging technologies.

Lam emphasized the potential of drones in commercial and industrial operations from cargo delivery to security surveillance.

In the past, power lines and other structures in different parts of the country were inspected manually. We can now use drones for a better job that is faster and more efficient," Lam said.

He said that drones are likely to replace some helicopters and ferries, as well as seaplanes. However, their market size won't immediately rival commercial aviation.

Although initially focusing on commercial applications, Lam said the company was open to exploring possible military applications.

But regulatory frameworks?remain the biggest obstacle to drone adoption.

It's still not regulated. Lam added that countries are developing regulations. ST Engineering is working with governments around the world to tackle air traffic management?and safety issues over populated areas.

The company's ST Engineering AirX Joint Venture announced on Tuesday?two partnerships? to bring the AirFish Voyager a 10-passenger vessel that can glide above the water at speeds of up to 100 knots to the market via ferry operators in Southeast Asia and India.

ST Engineering continues to expand its MRO (maintenance repair and overhaul) operations in order to meet the growing demand.

The company launched its first integrated service centre in the world, a Singapore-based airframe and engine nacelle?center, this week. The facility will streamline aircraft maintenance and reduce turnaround time for operators.

Lam stated that ST Engineering expanded its nacelle maintenance and repair capacity in the U.S., China, and Singapore over the last year. The Singapore facility is expected to be operational within the next few months. Reporting by Julie Zhu in Singapore and Jun Yuan Yong; editing by Jamie Freed
