United Airlines abandons merger talks with American Airlines following rejection of their merger proposal

United Airlines announced on Monday that it had stopped its pursuit of a merger with American Airlines after the latter declined to engage in a first approach.

The meeting was to discuss the future development of Washington's Dulles Airport.

The combination of two of the U.S.'s largest network carriers would have been the biggest consolidation in a decade. It would have further tightened a market that was already dominated by four similar-sized players.
