Rehearing of India's SpiceJet bankruptcy case will be a setback to lessors

A court in India said that the bankruptcy petitions of?aircraft lessees against cash-strapped SpiceJet would be heard by a 'new bench' after SpiceJet reached a settlement at the last minute with one lessor.

This is a blow to the aircraft leasing companies who have been fighting for years to recover their debts from India's fourth-largest carrier. However, it is a respite for SpiceJet because its current management will continue to run the airline while the insolvency cases are reviewed.

The National Company Law Tribunal prepared an?judgment that covered eight petitions against SpiceJet. However, it said the withdrawal of one petition following the settlement would require the ruling to be rewritten.

A judge stated that the tribunal did not have enough time to rewrite the judgement and deliver it, as one of the judges is retiring on Wednesday. SpiceJet didn't immediately respond to an?ask for comment.

It was not immediately known how much 'SpiceJet Lessors' are claiming. SpiceJet has been struggling financially, as the airline is delaying "salary payment to many of its Pilots", Reports from June indicated that SpiceJet's finances were under stress. The airline was delaying?salary payments to many of its pilots.
