Fire intensifies after explosion at Russian oil depot hit by Ukraine

Authorities in the region said that an explosion rocked a Russian oil depot where firefighters were trying to put out a fire which broke out following a drone attack by Ukraine earlier this week.

Officials said that during the extinguishing procedure, an explosion occurred due to the depressurisation. Burning oil was also released.

They added that the fire had spread to a second tank and increased the area to 10,000 sq m (108,000 sq ft) - which is more than double the original size of the fire. Two firefighters had been injured and more than 450 firefighters tried to put out the fire.

Interfax reported that regional authorities had stated that excessive levels of harmful chemicals, including benzene were detected in atmospheric testing at two nearby locations.

The depot is located near the village Kavkazskaya at a rail station for Russian oil supplies that are sent to a pipeline connecting Kazakhstan to the Black Sea.

The difficulty of putting the fire out highlights the disruption caused by Ukraine's frequent attacks on Russia's vast and lucrative energy industry. These revenues are used to fuel Moscow's military effort. Russia has also pounded Ukraine’s energy grid during the war, causing blackouts that affect civilians and industries.

The Russian foreign ministry stated on Thursday that Ukraine has already violated the proposed ceasefire when it attacked the depot.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Ukrainian President Volodymyr has stated that Kyiv would be willing to participate in a ceasefire discussed between U.S. president Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin on Tuesday if there was a written agreement with Russia.

Ukrainian officials have accused Russia of violating its ceasefire agreement by attacking civilian targets. Zelenskiy stated on Wednesday that Russian attacks against infrastructure, such as hospitals and rail equipment, show "Putin’s words are different from reality".
