Bangladesh announces a new tender for the purchase of 50,000 T.

On Monday, traders reported that Bangladesh's state grain buyer had issued a second international tender for the purchase of 50,000 metric tonnes of rice.

The deadline to submit price offers is February 6.

After a heavily damaged domestic crop last year, Bangladesh continues to purchase large quantities of rice on international markets.

In August and October of 2024, floods in Bangladesh destroyed approximately 1.1 million tons (tonnes) of rice. This prompted the country to increase imports of this staple grain in order to lower food prices.

The new tender is seeking price offers for nonbasmati parboiled risotto in CIF terms (including ship unloading charges), for shipment to Chattogram and Mongla ports.

The rice can be imported from anywhere in the world and must be shipped within 40 days of contract award.

Bangladesh, which is the third largest rice producer in the world, produces approximately 40 million tons per year to feed a population of around 170 millions. Natural disasters can disrupt production, increasing the country's dependence on imported rice.

The previous Bangladeshi tender for 50,000 tons rice ended on January 9. Michael Hogan, Christopher Cushing, and Mrigank Dahaniwala (Reporting)
