Bangladesh receives offers to purchase 50,000 T of rice in an auction, traders claim

The traders estimated that the lowest price in the tender for Bangladesh's state grain buyer to buy 50,000 metric tonnes of rice, which closed on February 2, was $424.77 per metric ton CIF.

They said that the offer is believed to have come from Indian trading house Bagadiya Brothers.

They said that offers are still being evaluated and no purchases have yet been reported. Bangladesh has a tradition of taking some time to consider the price offers made in rice and grain tenders before making a final decision.

The reports reflect the opinions of traders, and it is still possible to estimate prices and volume later.

After a bad year of weather, Bangladesh continues to buy a lot of rice on international markets.

Floods in Bangladesh

In August and October of 2024, the destruction of 1.1 million tons rice prompted the country to increase imports to lower food prices.

The tender for the non-basmati parboiled risotto on Wednesday is seeking price offers in CIF terms, which includes cost, insurance, freight and ship unloading charges, for shipment to Chittagong or Mongla ports.

The traders said that these other companies participated in the tender. Their estimated offers per ton CIF liner-out were: Agrocorp $428.11; Pattabhi Agro Foods 427.99; Gurudeo Exports $430.27; Mondal Stone $435.00; Aditya Birla $400.00 and Indo Sino $408.00.

After the award of the contract, 40 days are required to submit a request for shipment.

A second international tender, also from Bangladesh, for 50,000 tons rice will close on the 27th of March. (Reporting and editing by Alexandra Hudson, with Michael Hogan)
