NTSB Board member Inman claims he was terminated by the White House

On 'Sunday, a Republican member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board claimed that he had been fired by the White House on Friday without explanation.

Todd Inman was a former chief staffer to Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao in President Donald Trump's initial term. He had been a member of the NTSB from April 2024. Inman was the board member on the scene at the American Airlines collision with an Army helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport in January 2025 that 'killed 67 persons and the November crash of the UPS cargo plane taking off from the Louisville, Kentucky airport which killed 15 people.

The White House didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Inman's name was taken off the NTSB site on Sunday. In an email, the NTSB informed senior leaders that Inman was no longer employed.

The NTSB refused to comment.

In May, the White House dismissed Alvin Brown, then Vice Chair of the NTSB. Brown, a Democrat and the first African American to be elected as mayor of Jacksonville in Florida, has sued over his dismissal.

The NTSB is responsible for investigating all civil aviation accidents. The board investigates accidents that occur in other modes of transport, such as highways, ships, pipelines, and railroads, and makes safety recommendations and determines probable causes.

Inman said that serving as a member of the NTSB was a great honour. Inman said, "These horrible accidents have taken a toll on my family and me. It has also changed my perspective on how we regulate the safety of travelers."

John DeLeeuw was confirmed by the Senate late last month to fill Brown's NTSB seat. DeLeeuw had previously served as the?managing Director of Safety and Efficiency for American Airlines, and as a Boeing 787 Captain. (Reporting and editing by Mark Porter, Aurora Ellis and David Shepardson)
