Officials say that Israel has targeted the Hamas leadership during its military strike on Qatar.

Israel has launched airstrikes against Hamas leaders and their supporters in Qatar, expanding its military operations across the Middle East. This includes the Gulf Arab State where the Palestinian Islamist movement has had its political base for many years.

Qatar, which has served as a mediator with Egypt in talks about a ceasefire for the war that has been raging in Gaza for almost two years, condemned the attack and called it "cowardly".

Two Hamas source confirmed that Hamas officials on the team negotiating the ceasefire survived the attack. The attack followed an evacuation order issued in Gaza City, where Israel has launched an offensive in an attempt to destroy the Hamas group and its capabilities in Gaza Strip.

Israeli officials said the strike targeted top Hamas figures, including Khalil Al-Hayya its exiled Gaza leader and top negotiator.

The attack occurred shortly after Hamas’ armed wing al-Qassam Brigades claimed responsibility for the shooting which killed six people on Monday at a bus station on the outskirts Jerusalem.

The attack is likely to be a fatal blow to the efforts to achieve a ceasefire. This is especially true since negotiations were held in Qatar, an Arab Gulf country.

The United Arab Emirates normalised their relations with Israel in 2020 under the Abraham Accords. They called the Israeli attack against Doha, "blatant" and "cowardly".

Abu Dhabi had already expressed anger over the plan of an Israeli minister to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank. The UAE said that this was a line that could not be crossed.

Saudi Arabia, a regional powerhouse, denounced a "brutal Israeli attack" on Qatar's sovereignty.

AMBULANCES GATHER ABROAD ATTACK SITE

Israel's military issued evacuation orders to residents of Gaza City in the midst of a panic, confusion and fear after Israel claimed it was going to destroy the area as part a massive assault to eliminate Hamas.

Since the Israeli government formulated a plan in which it hoped to strike Hamas' last strongholds, the residents of Gaza's largest urban area, where a million Palestinians lived before the war began, have been anticipating an attack for weeks.

In Gaza City, anxiety spread through the tents that housed cancer patients who had been displaced.

There's nowhere left. Not in the south nor the north. "We're completely trapped", said Bajess Al-Khaldi. A cancer patient who was displaced, as people watched the rubble from several buildings that were destroyed by an Israeli attack.

Witnesses reported hearing several blasts in Doha. Legtifya, the city's petrol station, was erupting with black smoke. The Emiri Guard of Qatar has guarded a small residential complex next to the petrol station 24 hours a days since the start of the Gaza Conflict.

After the explosion, ambulances, at least 15 unmarked police cars and government vehicles surrounded the site.

Israel's tallies show that Israel has killed top Hamas leaders in the years since the Palestinian militants attacked Israel, October 2023. They claim 1,200 Palestinians were killed and 251 taken hostage.

In the Gaza Conflict, Israel also conducted airstrikes, military actions, and other military operations in Lebanon, Syria and Yemen.

In Lebanon it targeted the heavily-armed Iran-backed Hezbollah group and in Yemen, it carried out airstrikes against the Iran-aligned Houthi. Both groups launched attacks on Israel during Gaza's conflict. Reporting by Andrew Mills, Jana Choukeir and Steven Scheer in Dubai, and Maayan and Maayan Loubell in Jerusalem.
