Panama Canal expects brand-new water reservoir for ship crossings in 6 years

The Panama Canal expects to complete a billiondollar building of a new water tank within six years that will help guarantee the passage of 36 ships a day, the administrator of the international waterway stated on Monday.

The Indio River tank task would enter into the network of existing synthetic lakes that permit safe passage through the canal and provide water for human intake.

We are looking at six years, canal administrator Ricaurte Vasquez said.

Vasquez said the task would supply a bit more certainty to keep 36 transits each day, a greater level of reliability for the route.

Last month, the Panama Canal stated after recent rains increased water levels, it would increase the total number of readily available slots in both Neopanamax and Panamax locks to 35 slots after Aug. 5.

Increased rains in recent months has actually enabled the canal, the world's second-largest, to renew its watershed, leading to an increase in transits that had been badly restricted last year amidst a drought.

Ricuarte estimated the task would cost around $1.2. billion, plus an additional $400 million in financial investments in. surrounding neighborhoods.
