French stocks drop as Macron calls snap elections

France's bluechip index CAC 40 come by as much as 1.9% at the opening on Monday after French President Emmanuel Macron called surprise snap elections in action to his camp's defeat in EU elections.

Shares in BNP Paribas, France's most significant bank, fell by near to 8% at the opening and was trading 4.5% lower at 0726 GMT, while shares in French lending institutions Credit Agricole and Societe Generale also suffered heavy losses.

Building business Eiffage and Vinci likewise traded around 5% lower.

Macron's unexpected choice might hand major political power to the far-right after years on the sidelines, and neuter his presidency 3 years before it ends.
