Algerian wheat purchase estimated at 600,000 metric tonnes, traders claim

European traders reported on Friday that Algeria's state grain agency OAIC purchased approximately 600,000 metric tonnes of milling wheat at an international auction on Thursday.

Some estimates went as high as 660,000 tonnes. The lower end of the trader estimates between 600,000 and 700,000 tonnes on Thursday night.

The prices reported on Friday were largely between $250.50 and $252 per ton, cost and freight included (c&f), the same as on Thursday night.

Algerian purchases of wheat in tenders can be of any origin. However, traders suspect that it could come from Russia or elsewhere around the Black Sea.

The reports reflect the opinions of traders, and it is possible to estimate prices and volume later.

Wheat was requested for shipment in 2024 from two main supply regions, including Europe: October 1-15 and October 16-31. The shipment date is one month sooner if the wheat comes from South America or Australia.

Algeria is an important customer of wheat from the European Union and France in particular, but Russians and other Black Sea exporters are expanding rapidly on the Algerian market. Algeria bought 700,000-750,000 tons of wheat at $241-$244 per ton, c&f inclusive. Since then, the world wheat price has fallen to its lowest level in four years, partly due to expectations for a good U.S. crop, which created buying opportunities for importers.
