Sources say that India's Bharat petroleum and HPCL Mittal purchase Venezuelan oil

Three sources familiar with the industry said that the state-run Bharat Oil Corp made its first ever purchase of Venezuelan crude oil. HPCL Mittal Energy Ltd (HMEL), a private refiner, also bought Venezuelan crude for the first?time in two years. Sources said that the 'two refiners' bought one million barrels of Venezuelan Merey crude each. Sources said that the heavy oil purchased in two separate deals will be co-loaded onto a large crude carrier, saving on shipping costs. This will increase India's imports to Venezuelan crude by at least six million barrels until April. The sources who asked to remain anonymous in order to discuss confidential information said that Bharat Oil and HMEL bought the Venezuelan crude oil from Vitol. The price details weren't immediately available.

BPCL and HMEL have not responded to our requests for comments. Vitol refused to comment. HMEL is a joint venture between the state-run Hindustan Petroleum Corp. and steel tycoon Lakshmi Niwas Mittal. Trade flow data from LSEG & Kpler shows that HMEL received Venezuelan crude oil in February '2024. Indian refiners are buying Venezuelan crude oil to diversify their oil supply mix, as they reduce Russian imports. This helped New Delhi secure an interim trade agreement with Washington. HMEL stopped importing Russian oil in October. New Delhi hasn't announced any official plans to stop oil imports from Russia. However, Indian refiners are avoiding Russian crude.

Reliance Industries and HPCL had previously purchased Venezuelan crude oil for around $6-$7 a barrel less than the benchmark Dubai crude oil. Since January, traders Vitol and Trafigura are marketing and selling Venezuelan oil under licenses issued by the U.S. in a deal struck between Caracas & Washington.

BPCL splits the cargo 'equally' for discharge at a port located in southern Kerala, for its 310,000 barrels per day Kochi refinery and at a port located in western Gujarat for its 156,000 bpd Bina refining plant in central India. HMEL imports oil through the Mundra Port in 'western Gujarat State' for its Bathinda Refinery, which produces 226,000 barrels per day in northern India. Sources have said that exports of Venezuelan crude oil to the U.S. will also pick up in April. Refiner Valero Energy is slated to receive up to 6 million barrels?of Venezuelan Crude?in March. Chevron has been rapidly increasing shipments to the U.S., and other U.S. refining companies are seeking direct purchases from Venezuela.
