Two people dead after passenger train derails in northern India

Authorities said that at least two people died and 20 were injured when several coaches of a train carrying passengers jumped the tracks on Thursday in India's north state of Uttar Pradesh.

The TV images showed the coaches of the Chandigarh Dibrugarh express, which connects India’s northern states with the eastern state Assam on their side along the track, with passengers outside, sitting with their luggage.

The derailment took place in Gonda District, which is more than 60 miles (100 km) away from the state capital Lucknow.

The state's relief commissioner stated that a team of doctors treated the injured at the scene before moving them to a hospital.

Pankaj Singh, a spokesman for the railways, told ANI that initial reports indicated around five coaches were involved in the incident.

Singh stated that the first priority was to finish all relief and rescue efforts as soon as possible.

Last month, a freight train collided with a stationary passenger car in West Bengal. At least 15 people were killed and dozens injured. (Shikshi Dayal and Shilpa jamkhandikar contributed additional reporting; Sudipto Ganguly wrote the article; YPrajesh edited by Angus MacSwan and YP Rajesh)
