Air India and Lufthansa have announced plans to 'fly more passengers between India and Europe, and collaborate on areas such as route planning and IT infrastructure. The airlines are hoping to take advantage of the newly concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement.

The partnership will first focus on increasing traffic between India, and Lufthansa’s core markets, Germany, Austria. Belgium, Italy, and Switzerland. Later, the partnership would expand to include the rest of Europe and India.

The codeshare agreement currently covers 145 routes in 15 Indian cities, 29 European cities, and 20 countries.

The partnership's scope will be finalised once a comprehensive business agreement is formed, which will then be subjected to regulatory approval.

Air India and Singapore Airlines signed a framework of cooperation in?January to allow the carriers to increase routes, reduce overlap, and enhance their collaboration more generally. Singapore Airlines owns a 25% stake in Air India.
