Elon Musk pays TSA salaries amid budget fight, airport queues

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, announced 'on Saturday that he will cover the salaries of US workers. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers are on their second unpaid stoppage in six months, due to a long-term federal funding lapse.

It is now the fifth week of the budget impasse regarding funding for TSA's parent, Department of Homeland Security. TSA screeners and other TSA staff are just days away from not receiving a second paycheck. However, they are under pressure to show up because screening times in some airports can take hours. Musk said in a social media post that he would pay for the salaries of TSA staff during the funding 'impasse, which is negatively affecting so many Americans' lives at airports across the country.

DHS, the?TSA, and representatives of?Musk have not responded to immediate requests for comment. Travel groups and airlines say that the TSA's approximately 50,000 airport security officers may be absent again this weekend. According to federal data, TSA employees earn on average $61,000 per year. In the midst of the partial U.S. Government shutdown, airports are holding food drives and accepting donations for security screening staff.

DHS funding timelines are still uncertain. John Thune, the Senate Majority leader, said on Friday that bipartisan negotiators had narrowed remaining disputes over DHS funding but no deal has been reached. In February, Democrats in Congress agreed to fund the majority of the government in return for withholding funding from the?DHS after the deaths of two U.S. Citizens in Minnesota by immigration officials. Donald 'Trump claimed that a wealthy donor had provided $130 million last year to cover possible military pay shortages due to the 43-day government shutdown. It was the longest ever in U.S. History.
