According to the head of the chamber, security changes will reduce boat tolls on Argentina's Parana River.

Guillermo Wade of the CAPyM chamber said that the changes announced by the Argentinean government to the transit safety measures along the Parana River would significantly reduce the toll rates charged to grain cargo ships.

Argentina, which is a major grain exporter in the world, uses the Parana River Transport Corridor to ship 80% of its agricultural exports around the globe.

Wade said that the effect of reducing the safety margin beneath the keel of ships would only be noticeable when an award is made to deepen the dredging.

Wade, in an email sent late Monday, said that the modification to the under-keel payment is timely and can be used for the new dredging bid, as it will reduce toll rates significantly.

The announcement that safety regulations would be relaxed for Parana was made a few weeks after an attempt to dredge Parana River failed amid accusations of sabotage.

The Argentinean government announced that a new auction would be held but did not provide any dates.

The government stated in a resolution published in the Argentine Official Gazette on Tuesday that the new safety margin is intended to "accomplish the evolution of future deepening, beaconing, and remodeling or expansion of existing works." (Report by Maximilian Heath, Editing by Hugh Lawson).
