Stellantis closes its van factory at Luton in the UK

Stellantis, an automaker in Europe, announced on Tuesday that it would close its Vauxhall factory in Luton (southern England), putting the jobs of more than 1,000 people at risk.

The company, who also owns Peugeot, Citroen and Chrysler brands, announced that it will consolidate its British light commercial vehicle production at its Ellesmere Port facility in northern England where it is investing 63 million pounds (50 million pounds) in an all electric vehicle hub.

The Milan-listed firm said it would relocate "hundreds" of jobs from Luton, to Ellesmere port. It had begun a consultation process with its employees and unions.

The British government stated: "While we are encouraged to see Stellantis invest in the future Ellesmere Port Plant, we understand that this is a worrying time for families of Luton employees who may be affected."

The company didn't specify how many jobs were at risk.
