Zelenskiy states Ukraine in talk with send Azeri gas to EU, Bloomberg reports

Ukraine remains in speak with send natural gas from Azerbaijan to the European Union as it looks for to maintain its role as a transit country and help Western neighbours ensure their energy security, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said in an interview with Bloomberg News on Wednesday.

An offer to change Russian gas with Azeri gas is among the propositions being discussed, Zelenskiy informed Bloomberg News.

It's the cabinet authorities who are dealing with this now, he stated.

Ukraine's energy ministry and the state energy company Naftogaz did not instantly respond to requests for comment from .

Regardless of more than two years of major war with Russia, Ukraine still sends close to 15 billion cubic metres ( bcm) each year of Russian gas to Europe, though a fraction of the 150 bcm of piped gas that streamed previously.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stated that Kyiv

will not extend a deal with Russia's Gazprom (GAZP.MM) when it expires at the end of the year.

Ukraine does not share a border with Azerbaijan, so any Azeri gas would still have to be piped through Russia.

Last month Hikmat Hajiyev, an Azeri governmental advisor, informed that the EU and Ukraine have asked Azerbaijan

to help with discussions with Russia relating to a gas transit offer.

The EU has cut the majority of its Russian gas imports but some main European countries still depend on gas from Russia through a. pipeline that crosses Ukraine, including Austria which still. gets the majority of its gas through this route.
