South Sudan's costs to almost double in 2024/25, financing minister states

South Sudan's federal government spending will nearly double to 4.17 trillion pounds (about $1.4. billion) in the 2024/25 (JulyJune) from 2.1. trillion pounds in the previous year, its financing minister stated. on Wednesday.

South Sudan's economy is still reeling from the impacts of. the 2013-2018 civil war and relies greatly on petroleum sales. for its earnings.

Finance Minister Marial Dongrin Ater, presenting a draft. budget plan to parliament, said the 2024/25 costs will be moneyed. by raising 1.138 trillion pounds from oil revenues while non-oil. profits is projected to be 1.119 trillion pounds.

The remainder of the budget plan will originate from external grants and. borrowing, he said.

Ater stated in the 2023/24 , the economy had. contracted 5%, due to disruptions to oil production and exports. and the effect of flooding in parts of the nation. He did not. provide a projection for 2024/25.

While costs is to increase in local currency terms, the. South Sudanese pound has lost 65% of its worth versus the U.S. dollar since January, according to main reserve bank rates.

The primary pipeline carrying oil from South Sudan through. neighbouring Sudan for export started suffering blockages in. February due to issues brought on by the war between Sudan's army. and the paramilitary Quick Support Forces (RSF).
