Dominican Republic blackouts caused by major grid failure

Authorities?said that the Dominican Republic experienced a nationwide 'blackout' on Monday due to a?major failure? in its national power grid. This is the second occurrence of a?outage? within three months.

As crews repaired the power outage, traffic was halted and public transport services were disrupted. Some businesses had to close as they worked to restore electricity.

Joel Santos of the Ministry of Energy and Mines in Colombia, who spoke at a press briefing, stated that a failure occurred in the grid around 10:50 am.

Santos stated that the power outage occurred due to a faulty transmission line switch which tripped the system and forced it into protection mode.

Santos told the press that "from the first moment on, established protocols were activated with the goal to restore the system as soon as possible."

The Dominican Electricity Transmission Company, owned by the Dominican government, said that before noon on Wednesday afternoon, power was cut at all of the main power plants in the country without any warning. This triggered a shutdown of other generating units.

Santos reported that by mid-afternoon the grid had returned to almost 30% of its normal capacity.

Santos said that hospitals, water, mass transit, and airports are all running on "backup power".
