After paying a fine, the suspected Russian shadow fleet tanker GRINCH is allowed to leave France

The French authorities allowed the seized oil 'tanker GRINCH to leave territorial waters, after?the owner of?the vessel?paid a penalty amounting to "multiple million euros", French Foreign Minister Jean Noel Barrot announced on Tuesday.

"Circumventing European Sanctions comes at a price." Barrot wrote in a X post that Russia would no longer be able to?finance its war without consequence by using a 'ghost fleet' off our coasts.

The vessel 'GRINCH' was seized a month ago in the Mediterranean and diverted to an anchorage off Marseille, France, under suspicion that it is part of a shadow fleet which allows Russia to export oil despite the sanctions.

French authorities have confirmed that the?vessel left the Russian port of?Murmansk early in January and was sailing under a Comoros' flag.

In a press release, French authorities said that the company who owns 'the ship' was ordered to pay a fine for not being able 'to justify its flag. (Reporting and editing by Marc Leras, Inti Landauro)
