Sweden announces an additional $1.4 billion military aid to Ukraine

Sweden announced on Friday a $1.42 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which will include drones, long range missiles, and ammunition.

In a press release, the government said that the largest component of the package was the purchase of newly-manufactured?short range air defence equipment' worth 4.3 billion crowns.

The total amount of military aid that Sweden has provided to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022, including this package, which is part a framework of 40 billion crowns for 2026, amounts to 103 million crowns. Defence Minister Paljonson said at a press briefing.

He said that the focus was on new air defence systems and long-range capability, as well as ammunition to meet Ukraine's urgent operational needs.

The Geneva talks between Ukraine and Russia ended on Wednesday without any breakthrough. Volodymyr Zelenskiy, the president of Ukraine, said that he was "dissatisfied" with the result. Washington reported making "meaningful progress".

Stockholm also held a separate event on Thursday

It plans to 'issue guarantees to the World Bank for a 2.5 billion crowns loan to Ukraine.
