Port Vale shocks the FA Cup by reaching the quarter-finals

Port Vale, a third-tier team struggling to survive in the Premier League, beat Sunderland by a 1-0 score and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first since 1954.

Ben Waine’s 28th-minute?goal proved enough to clinch an?famous?victory? for the Vale Park Club, who were in danger of being dropped from League One during this season.

Southampton, the second-tier team, beat Fulham 1-0 in a Premier League match at home earlier on Sunday.

Southampton became the first club outside the Premier League to reach the quarter finals of the competition this season thanks to a penalty from substitute Ross Stewart, after Joachim Andersen had fouled Finn Azaz in the area.

Port Vale, who had a gritty performance on a worn-out pitch, joined them later.

Sunderland, a mid-table club in the Premier League, and 57 places above League One's bottom club Port Vale were pedestrians against their enraged hosts, and paid the penalty.

Waine scored after Sunderland had failed to clear the corner. The hosts held on well despite late pressure.

The 24-year old New Zealander had scored the winning goal against Bristol City, a second-tier club in midweek during a delayed Fourth-round match.

"We're on a roll right now," said?Waine. "It wasn't pretty, but I think we earned it. We lost this pitch here and we played according to the conditions. "We defended our lives."

Southampton, who won the competition in 2020-21 and in 2021-22, is back in the quarterfinals. They thoroughly deserved their victory over a lacklustre Fulham.

Fulham goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte was forced to make saves by Azaz and Tom Fellows before Stewart's penalty in stoppage time.

Southampton and Port Vale join a strong-looking quartet that has already made it?to the final eight. Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool are in the running for the quarter-finals.

On Sunday, the fifth round continues with Leeds United hosting Norwich City. Brentford will play West Ham United on Monday. (Reporting and editing by Prithy Sarkar, with Martyn Herman)
