Belgium sets bail at 10 million euros for seized Russian oil tanker

The government announced on Tuesday that Belgium had imposed a bail of 10 million euros ($11.61 mln) on the Russian oil tanker Ethera which it had seized on Sunday.

The North Sea Ministry said that the tanker belonged to a Russian shadow Fleet sailing under a false flag with false documents.

"Fifty-five violations have been identified." The main issue was false certificates. This stemmed from the discovery that the ship was sailing with a false Guinean Flag.

Ethera will be able to sail again after the amount is paid and the inspection confirms that the ship has been in compliance. This includes obtaining a valid certificate, assuring a flag-state, and fixing the technical problems.

"Our government takes firm action against vessels in the shadow fleet." Theo Francken, Defence Minister, said that with this operation we enforce EU sanctions, protect the North Sea and reduce the funding of Russia's conflict in Ukraine.

The sanctions that the West imposed against Russia after its invasion of Ukraine, aimed to cut down on its oil revenues, have resulted in a "shadow" fleet of tankers which help Moscow keep?its crude shipments flowing.

Ethera is listed on the European Union sanctions list.

The Russian embassy in Belgium has not responded to a comment request immediately, but Moscow had previously called the seizure or destruction of its tankers and vessels carrying cargoes a form of piracy.

The ownership of shadow fleet vessels is usually opaque. This has raised concerns about possible environmental risks. These tankers are often poorly regulated and old, and they may be prone to leaks, mechanical failures or spills.
