Italy takes $131 mln from Amazon over alleged tax, labour offences

Italy's tax cops have seized some 121 million euros ($ 131 million) from an Italian system of ecommerce giant Amazon as part of an examination into alleged tax fraud and unlawful labour practices, district attorneys' files showed on Tuesday.

In a 94-page order, the Milan Prosecutors' Office implicates the logistic services unit Amazon Italia Transportation of preventing labour and tax laws, relying on cooperatives or limited liability business that supplied workers while leaving out VAT tax responsibilities and lowering social security payments.

Prosecutors declare such a system allowed the Amazon system to keep the prices of its services competitive in the Italian market.

Amazon said it had abided by the required rules.

We adhere to all applicable laws and regulations where we run, and require companies who deal with us to do the same ... We will continue to assist the pertinent authorities with their questions, Amazon said in a statement.

Comparable investigations have actually targeted other big services recently including global delivery groups DHL and UPS , German logistics firm DB Schenker and Italian grocery store chain Esselunga, district attorneys said.
