Putin's ally warns European power over seizure Russian vessels

Nikolai Patrushev - a close friend of Vladimir Putin - was quoted on Tuesday as saying that Russia could deploy its navy to prevent European powers from seizing Russian vessels. If European ships were seized, Russian shipping may be retaliated against, Patrushev said.

Western countries have tried to isolate Russia from the global economy?and cripple it financially by imposing over 30,000 sanctions because of its 'war in Ukraine.

Also, they have tried to stop oil tankers that are suspected of being involved in?Russian oil deliveries. As part of its efforts to reduce Venezuelan oil exports, the United States seized an oil tanker with a Russian flag in January.

Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, has called such acts of piracy.

Patrushev is a Kremlin aide, and the chairman of Russia's Maritime Board. He told a Russian media outlet, 'Argumenty i Facty', that if we do not give them a strong rebuff they will soon become so arrogant, and will even try to block the 'access' to our country to the seas, at least within the 'Atlantic basin.

"We are convinced that the Navy is, and will always be, the best way to ensure the safety of navigation. Patrushev stated that in 'the main maritime regions, including areas?far away from Russia,?substantial forces should be deployed permanently - forces capable to cool the ardour and fervor of Western pirates.
