US lawmakers criticize State Dept for not helping Americans trapped in Mideast during Iran war

U.S. legislators slammed Tuesday the State Department for urging U.S. Citizens in the Middle East to 'evacuate' three days after U.S. and Israeli air wars against Iran began, when air travel was?severely interrupted. They said it was a lack of planning.

On Monday, the Department urged Americans across 16 countries in the ?Middle East to immediately depart the region using "available ?commercial transportation" without offering any U.S.-government-vouched means. In a press release, the U.S. Embassy in 'Jerusalem' said that it could not offer any assistance to Americans who were trying to leave.

"American taxpayers are forced every year to give Israel $3.8 billion, and our own U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem tells Americans, good luck, you're on your own," said former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene. She resigned after a fallout with Trump.

Greene, who is a Republican and has been a long-time opponent of U.S. involvement abroad, said: "The betrayal was unbelievable."

The U.S. and Israeli air war on Iran that began Saturday has already caused shockwaves throughout the world. It has disrupted energy supplies, and thrown global air travel into chaos. Iranian drones attacked the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia overnight.

The major Gulf aviation hubs, such as the world's largest international airport in Dubai, which normally handles more than 1,000 flights per day, remained closed on Tuesday for a 4th day, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. The cost of tickets has risen.

In a recent post on X, Democratic Senator Andy Kim stated that the Trump administration had "zero strategy or planning".

"Now Americans only have a few options to evacuate in a dangerous situation without government assistance." Kim said that the administration was failing its citizens.

The State Department has not responded to any questions about how Americans should leave in the absence commercial flights or whether Washington is planning evacuation flights.

A U.S. official stated on Monday that the Department activated a task force inter-agency to manage the crisis and launched a WhatsApp channel dedicated for the purpose, which, according to the official, has gathered 15,000 subscribers. The report did not mention government assistance to evacuate citizens.

In an X-post, Democratic Senator Chris Murphy stated that the State Department forces everyone to leave the area immediately but refuses to assist people in leaving the region. He added, "Incompetence everywhere."

The California Congressman Ted Lieu urged the Administration to schedule U.S. Government evacuation flights for the stranded Americans.

The benchmark crude oil prices rose by?about 7 percent on Tuesday. This was the third consecutive session of gains as the U.S./Israeli conflict against Iran intensified. In a post on social media overnight, Trump claimed that the U.S. had a "virtually limitless supply" of munitions, and that wars could be fought very successfully and "forever" using these supplies.

Can't?Guarantee Your Safety

The United States is lacking Senate-confirmed Ambassadors in a number of countries, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq.

The U.S. Embassy at this moment is not able to assist you. The U.S. Embassy is not in a position to assist Americans directly or evacuate them from Israel. Israel", the embassy stated in an X-post and said that citizens can sign up for shuttles operated by the Israeli Ministry of Tourism at the Taba border crossing between Egypt and Israel.

Washington cannot guarantee the safety of the route. The U.S. Embassy is not able to make any recommendations (for or against the Ministry of Tourism shuttle). The U.S. Government cannot guarantee your safety if you decide to use this option.

It is not clear how many Americans and dual citizens reside in the area. The State Department encourages its citizens to register with their database while abroad.

The Department announced on Tuesday that it has ordered the departure from the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait and Jordan of all non-emergency U.S. Government personnel. U.S. missions have taken similar measures in Lebanon and Israel.
