Europe introduces Hera asteroid probe on SpaceX rocket

Europe's Hera asteroid probe launched from Florida on a SpaceX rocket on Monday, beginning a twoyear trip to review an asteroid slammed off course by NASA's DART spacecraft in 2022.

The return visit to the Dimorphos asteroid two years after the historical crash marks the latest step in efforts to see whether an inbound small asteroid could, if required, be deflected from Earth to prevent possibly extensive damage.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the probe lifted off at around 10:53 a.m. regional time (1453 GMT), according to a live webcast.

The European Area Agency chose Elon Musk's SpaceX for the launch to fill a gap in Europe's own access to space.

Dimorphos is a moonlet of Didymos, which is specified as a. near-Earth asteroid.

DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) was a. proof-of-concept objective developed to utilize a spacecraft to push a. celestial object that might otherwise strike Earth. Dimorphos. and Didymos do not position an actual danger to Earth.

The spacecraft clashed on Sept. 26, 2022, at about 14,000. miles per hour (22,530 kph) into Dimorphos, roughly 6.8 million. miles (11 million km) from Earth.

Researchers stated in March that the crash changed not only. the small asteroid's course but its shape also.

Developed by Germany's OHB SE, Hera will conduct a. post-impact survey of Dimorphos in order to help expand the U.S. area firm's experimental crash two years ago into a. repeatable method for planetary defence, according to ESA.

There are more than half a million asteroids in the Solar. System, of which over 25,000 are categorized as near-Earth. items. Of these, more than 1,000 are in ESA's risk list,. implying that they warrant close follow-up observations, according. to the firm.
