Argentina's Milei to privatize freight rail operator Belgrano Cargas

Argentina's federal government of libertarian President Javier Milei will privatize essential freight rail network Belgrano Cargas, one of the South American farming nation's crucial cargo rail operators for grains and raw materials.

The business, which is loss-making, operates 7,600 kilometers ( 4,722 miles) of tracks that will be contracted out to private firms, according to a statement from the government, which has more broadly been pressing privatization of state firms.

We are starting today the privatization procedure of the state-owned Belgrano Cargas, Diego Chaher, secretary of State Business and Corporations, stated at an interview.

The government declaration stated that the goal of the privatization was to increase the competitiveness of rail freight transport, promote financial investment in the sector and present market logic to the train sector.

Argentina is one of the biggest global suppliers of soybeans, corn, wheat and their derivatives, a part of which is transferred to farm hub Rosario by Belgrano Cargas.
