China's COMAC is seeking to take a majority stake in Lao Airlines. Laos government media reports this.

The state-owned Chinese planemaker COMAC proposed to take a stake in Lao Airlines' government-owned Lao Airlines. Lao Airlines recently began operating one of COMAC’s C909 regional aircraft, according to the Vientiane Times, a state-run newspaper.

The outlet reports that Lao Prime Minster Sonexay Sphandone said to the National Assembly Monday that the Lao Government is evaluating the COMAC proposal for a "comprehensive enterprise" in which COMAC holds at least a 51 percent stake.

Prime Minister said that the national carrier was one of four state-owned enterprises that were undergoing reform.

Lao Airlines and COMAC didn't immediately respond to comments.

Lao Airlines has been using the C909 on its domestic routes since it was delivered at the end March.

COMAC has developed its own commercial aircraft to compete with the dominant planemakers Airbus & Boeing.

COMAC's C919 narrow-body aircraft only flies in China, but its smaller C909 regional plane has been placed with airlines in Indonesia and Vietnam to gain access to foreign markets.

Since the beginning of last year, China's state-owned planemaker has increased marketing to regulators, airlines, and other stakeholders in order to compete with Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer on an international level. It also ramped up its production.

The C909 by COMAC, formerly known as the ARJ21 is a regional aircraft that can seat up to 90 passengers. It is China's very first jet-powered plane. It was put into service in 2016. It entered service in 2016.
