Olympic-Boy Forced Off Bus In Snow To Play A Role In Milano Cortina Opening Ceremony

His mother confirmed that the child, who was thrown off a bus by his mother in northern Italy because he didn't have the full fare on him, will be a part of?the opening ceremonies of the Milano?Olympics Winter?Olympics? on Friday.

Riccardo Z was an 11-year old boy who lived in a small town, less than 20 kilometers (12 miles), from Cortina d'Ampezzo. He did not have the money to pay for a surcharge on bus fares introduced by local transport companies for 'the Olympics' and had no choice but to walk home six kilometres through sub-zero temperatures and snow. This prompted outrage among parents and local authorities.

The Milano Cortina?Foundation reached out to the family after the incident and offered the boy's role as a symbol in the opening ceremonies.

Sole Vatalano, his mother, told Italian state broadcaster RAI that she had never seen him so excited and happy. It was the best gift that they could have given to him.

In Italy, the story of the boy attracted widespread media coverage amid concerns about price gouging during the Games from February 6-22.

The Foundation hasn't revealed the exact nature of Riccardo's role, but he is a member of a junior ski team.

The Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games are the first Olympics to be jointly hosted by two venues. More than 1,300 performers and volunteers, from 27 countries, have spent months preparing the opening ceremony at a tent near Milan's historic San Siro Stadium.

San Siro will not be the only stage on the Friday night show.

The Games will feature the first ever "widespread" ceremony, with several ski resorts in northern Italy sharing the spotlight. These include Cortina as co-host, Livigno, in Valtellina, and Predazzo, in the Trento Province.
