China bans 'hidden car door handles' to combat safety concerns

China will ban hidden car door handles starting in 2027. It is the first country that has banned a design pioneered and used by Tesla, as well as Chinese competitors such a Xiaomi.

In both China and the United States, there are concerns about safety issues with the hidden handle design. It can be operated by a key fob, mobile phone, or manually.

The U.S. Auto Safety Agency opened a defect investigation last year into the emergency door release controls on Tesla's Model?3 sedan. Tesla, who did not respond to the investigation at that time, failed to immediately reply to a comment request?on Tuesday.

China's Industry Ministry said Monday that its new safety technical standards require every car door to be equipped with both exterior handles and interior handles.

The use of mechanical?releases will be mandatory, while innovations like electrical handles are optional.

China's policy changes the location of handles on cars and the way they work to make sure they can be opened if there is an accident. The interior handles must also be visible.

The ministry stated that new vehicle models must align the design of their door handles with the new regulations by January 1, 2020, while approved models are required to comply with the rules before January 1, 2029.

Chinese state media reported that in 'October, the driver of a Xiaomi SU7 - Ultra sedan died after passing motorists were unable open the door and 'pull him from the burning car.
