FAA: US airlines must certify that they use merit-based hiring to hire pilots

Federal Aviation Administration announced on Friday that all U.S. Airlines must certify that they conduct merit-based hiring for pilots, or risk a federal investigation.

Transportation Secretary Sean?Duffy stated that the directive was issued to "address allegations of hiring by airlines based on race or sex" and said under the directive, "all U.S. carrier will be required to certify that this practice has been terminated."

Soon after taking office, in January 2025 President Donald Trump issued "sweeping executive orders" to dismantle the diversity, equity, and inclusion programs of the United States, and he urged the private sector to get involved.

No evidence exists that any airline in the United States employs unqualified pilots. There is no evidence that any?U.S. airline employs unqualified pilots. According to the FAA's Friday notice, airlines must ensure that pilot hiring is solely based on merit to meet their duty to provide a high degree of safety.

Airlines for America (which represents major passenger airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and others) said that "safety will always be the number one priority for U.S. airlines." The group stated that its "carriers" comply with federal laws and regulations, including those relating to licensing, qualifications and training.

U.S. airline pilots are overwhelmingly male and white.

United Airlines, which set the goal in 2021 to train 5,000 pilots, at least half of whom would be women or people of colour, by '2030, said at 'the time only 7% of their roughly 12,000 pilots are women, and 13% of them were people of color. The airline declined comment on Friday.

The FAA reversed its four-year old decision to rename the safety messages to pilots, and reinstated the previous "Notice to Airmen".

The FAA, under former president Joe Biden, renamed these messages in December 2021 "Notices To Air Missions," also known as NOTAMs. They said that this was to be inclusive of all aviators, and missions. (Reporting and editing by Chris Reese, Diane Craft, and David Shepardson)
