Kenya airport workers end strike after two days

After two days of disruption, Kenyan airport workers ended their strike on Tuesday. The strike had caused flight delays and cancellations in one of Africa's most important air transport hubs.

Some passengers who were stranded on the floor of Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport waited for hours before their flight took off. Some passengers slept overnight on the airport floor.

Transport ministry brokered an agreement with the Kenya Aviation Workers Union to end their industrial action. The ministry said that operations at the main Nairobi Airport?and other facility would now return back to normal. The exact time it will take to return to normal operations is not known.

PASSENGERS LEFT LIMBO

The union went on strike despite a court ruling that it shouldn't. It cited grievances, including the failure to reach a collective bargaining deal with the aviation authority.

Kenyan Teresa Kamau said on Tuesday that she was stuck in the airport from Monday at 1100 GMT (1400 local time).

Her flight to London was supposed to leave at 17:30. However, after spending five hours aboard, she was instructed to disembark and retrieve her luggage, while waiting for further instructions. "We've been here for a while," said?Kamau. "I just laid on the floor until morning."

Harry Frimpong, a Ghanaian traveller, and his twin brother Garry were 'hurried to the airport when they heard that their flight would be taking off. When they finally arrived at the airport, they were left in limbo.

Harry: "It is a really unfortunate situation. But I understand the workers must demand... 'their rights. (Additional reporting by Vincent Mumo Nzilani and Elias Biryabarema, in Nairobi; Writing by George Obulutsa & Alexander Winning; Editing Mark Potter & Jan Harvey).
