Air France-KLM announces record operating profit for the year as premium business booms

Air France-KLM announced on Thursday that it had achieved a record operating profit in 2025. This sent its shares up by 6.8%, as the company's strategy to offer a premium experience to customers was successful despite continuing cost challenges.

The demand for premium services has increased among European airlines, despite the fact that the number of Europeans who travelled to the United States dropped last year. Air France-KLM reported that growth was particularly strong on transatlantic routes. This is especially true for premium cabins, after the group made significant investments in upgraded airport lounges, faster Wi-Fi and a revamped First Class.

Ben Smith, Chief Executive of British Airways, said that "our airlines carried more than 100 million passengers last year and generated an operating result in excess of 2 billion euros (2.36 billion dollars) - the first time in our history."

This represents a 400 million euro increase from 2024, and is comfortably above the 1,88 billion euros predicted by analysts in a LSEG survey for earnings before taxes and interest.

As new planes are delivered, the airline anticipates increasing its capacity between?3% to 5% in this year. The airline also stated that it aims to increase its operating margins to more than?8% by the year 2028. It reported a 6.1% margin for 2025. The ?better-than-expected results were ?in part driven by a drop in fuel prices as well as an increase in revenue. The cost of operating the Amsterdam Schiphol Airport continued to rise, with fees reducing?per-passenger returns.

Air France-KLM's shares have risen by almost 52% in the past year as it has been able to reduce?expensive labor challenges.

Analysts have noted a possible slowdown of Americans' travel to Europe this year as the economic downturn weighs on consumer spending.
