Manager says that the Trump funding freeze has added millions of dollars to the cost of NY Tunnel project.

The commission overseeing the?New York Hudson Tunnel Project, worth $16 billion, said that it needed funding 'certainty' from the Trump administration in order to resume full construction. A funding 'freeze' added millions of dollars to the cost of the project.

The Hudson 'Tunnel' Project aims to repair storm damage in a century-old commuter tunnel that is used by over 200,000 people and 425 trains every day. The administration released $235.7 millions last week after it withheld funding since October 1 when a federal judge ordered the payment and an appeals court in the United States refused to stop it. In a filing to the U.S. Court of Federal Claims, the Gateway Development Corporation said that the project was due another $19m by March 2, but there are questions as to whether the U.S. Transportation Department would make any additional payments. The commission created by New York and New Jersey in order to oversee the project has said that it has deferred awarding major contracts needed to resume full construction. Millions of dollars have been spent on the project, including extra security on work sites and for the shutdown of the project that began February 6. This has put 1,000 workers without work.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has not yet commented.

In signed funding agreements, the project received about $15 billion of federal support from former president Joe Biden. So far, nearly $2 billion has already been spent.

The commission needs to be assured that federal funding will be forthcoming or else it may "be forced to proceed without any certainty regarding its funding." This is a situation that cannot be tolerated for a large public works project and its hundreds of employees, as well as the public who desperately needs transportation infrastructure.

Sources say that Republican President Donald Trump offered to unfreeze funds last month in exchange for Democrats' support to rename the Washington Dulles Airport, and New York Penn Station after him. Democrats strongly criticised?the proposal.

It is necessary to make frequent repairs on the existing Hudson Tunnel that was heavily damaged by Sandy in 2012. This will disrupt travel along America's busiest passenger rail line. (Reporting and editing by Franklin Paul, David Gregorio, and David Shepardson)
