Milan airport to be relabelled Silvio Berlusconi airport

Milan's main airport will be renamed after former Italian prime minister and business tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, Transportation Minister Matteo Salvini said on Friday.

Berlusconi, who passed away last year aged 86, led 4 governments at the helm of his centre-right Forza Italia celebration, and was one of Italy's most divisive figures of modern times.

Speaking at a conference in southern Italy, Salvini said the civil aviation authority had authorized a demand by the Lombardy area around Milan to relabel Malpensa airport in honour of Berlusconi, who came from the country's monetary capital.

Viewing as the decision rests with the transportation minister, I truly believe it will go ahead, said Salvini, leader of the rightist League party and a long-time Berlusconi ally.

In memory of my buddy Silvio, a great business person, a fantastic Milanese resident and a terrific Italian, Salvini later published on social media platform X above an image of Berlusconi and Malpensa airport.
