US aviation group: Poland closes major airports after Russian attacks on western Ukraine

According to the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Poland closed four airports, including the main Chopin Airport at Warsaw, on Wednesday after Russia launched drone attacks near the border with neighbouring Ukraine.

In a posting on X, the Polish armed forces stated that military aircraft were activated in order to ensure safety of airspace. However, there was no confirmation from the command as to whether any airports were closed.

The military's operational control posted on X that "Polish aircraft and allied aircraft operate in our airspace while ground-based radar reconnaissance and air defence systems have been brought up to the highest level of readiness."

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration announced that the Rzeszow Jasionka Airport, located in Poland's southeast and a major hub for passengers and arms transfers into Ukraine, had temporarily been closed.

Ukraine's Air Force had earlier reported that Russian drones were in the airspace of NATO member Poland, posing an imminent threat to Zamosc. However, it has since removed this statement from Telegram.

The Polish Defence Ministry has not responded to the request for comment.

The United States Democratic Senator Dick Durbin stated that repeated violations of NATO's airspace by Russian drones was a sign "Vladimir Putin tests our resolve to defend Poland and the Baltic nation."

After the carnage Putin is causing in Ukraine, these incursions can't be ignored, he said. Poland has been on alert for objects that enter its airspace ever since a stray Ukrainian rocket struck a village in southern Poland, killing two people a few weeks into Russia's full scale invasion of Ukraine. There have been no reports that Polish or allied defense systems destroyed drones.

Ukraine's Air Force reported that as of 0120 GMT most of Ukraine, including the western regions of Volyn, and Lviv which border Poland had been on air raid alert for several hours.

Ukrainian media reported several Russian drones crossing into Poland's space. There was no way to independently confirm the reports and there is no confirmation from Poland confirming that Russian drones entered Poland's airspace over night.
