The world's largest annual migration is China's Lunar New Year.

Each year, hundreds of millions of Chinese people travel across the country during Lunar New Year to visit their families or for sightseeing. This is the largest annual human migration in history.

The Lunar New Year travel rush or "Chunyun", as it is called in?Chinese can be seen as an indicator of the health of the economy and a test for its vast transportation system.

How long is it?

The Lunar New Year travel season began on February 2 and will last for 40 days.

The Spring Festival, or the New Year celebrations, is known as an official public holiday that runs from February 15 to 23.

How many trips are you expecting?

The official expectation is that 9.5 billion domestic journeys will be made during the 40 day period. This is up from 9.02 billion last year.

How do people travel?

China's railways?carried?1.01? Since the rush started on February 2, there have been a total of?1 billion passengers? By February 8, the number of flights in the first seven days had reached 16,32 million, out of the 95 million that were expected over the 40-day period.

What are the most popular destinations?

Top travel agencies in China say that international travel has increased this year. The holiday was extended by one day, to nine days.

The domestic demand is split between tropical destinations such as Hainan, a southern island province and Changbai Mountain in the northeast.

Thailand and Australia, two popular summer destinations in the world, are on the increase. Russia is also on the rise after it allowed Chinese tourists to travel visa-free in December 2025.

The demand for Japan, a perennial favourite, has declined sharply in recent years due to strained relations.

What is different this year?

China has 'extended' the official Spring Festival holiday by a day.
