Heathrow CEO: Istanbul will overtake London hub to become Europe's busiest Airport

Istanbul will surpass Heathrow this year or next, said the London airport's CEO, strengthening its case to build a 'new' runway after decades of political reversals and delays.

Thomas Woldbye, CEO of Heathrow Airport, said on Wednesday: "I definitely expect that maybe it will happen this year or maybe next year."

London's hub is near capacity and has only two runways, compared to Istanbul's five.

SEEKING GROWTH

Heathrow Airport, located in west London, was approved last year by Finance Minister Rachel Reeves for a new runway. This is part of plans to revitalize the stagnant economy.

Airport owned by France’s Ardian, Qatar Investment Authority and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment fund?and others said that expansion would require an incentive-based framework.

Woldbye stated that the framework Heathrow shareholders are looking for is not so different than?what they have today. The project will cost approximately 33 billion pounds ($44.6 billion), but the price could rise to 49 billion pounds when the new terminal and other improvements to the airport are added.

Heathrow Airport is gearing up to begin the long-term planning process. Lawmakers are expected to vote on this issue later in the year.

Woldbye stated that he is 'confident' the government will remain steadfast, despite its reputation of making u-turns. He cited the need to grow the country's economy.

He said, "This is one of the biggest projects that will deliver exactly?that."

Heathrow expects 85 million passengers in 2018, up from 84.5 millions last year. The?growth is due to larger planes that have?more seats.

The new Heathrow runway is expected to be operational by 2035. Final planning approval will need to be granted in 2029. ($1 = 0.7441 pounds) (Reporting and editing by Paul Sandle, Nivedita Bhattacharjee and Sarah Young)
